W.E.B DuBois Academy Summer

The free Summer program was created in response to years of parents of the Saturday school kids asking what we might be able to do for their kids in the Summer. Young men who show leadership are offered the opportunity to be Counselors-In-Training in the Summer Program; and many develop and become counselors in subsequent camps. This has also provided many kids with their first work experiences.

This program serves about 50 youth (ages 8 to 14) with organized, supervised, constructive fun and fellowship opportunities. Daily breakfast and lunches are provided. Weekly field trips are taken. Other weekly off-site programs (e.g., swimming, golf, rowing, etc.) area also included. Various specialists (e.g., karate, arts & crafts, birds of prey, etc.) are brought in to work with the kids. (e.g., weekly visits to Wester N.E. University to work in the computer lab; and weeklong robotics camp at CT State Community College Asnuntuck in Enfield, CT.

The camp is almost fully staffed by current / former W.E.B Academy youth. Young men that show leadership potential and readiness during the Saturday program, are often provided with stipends to work as Counselors-In-Training at the Summer Camp. Those who successfully do so, develop into regular counselors in subsequent years. Also, for the past few years, the Camp Directors, and Program Activity Directors, have also been former Academy members.
The camp is designed to provide the younger men safe, constructive daily activities; and the developing young men with leadership and work environment opportunities.
