OUR  PROGRAMS

Welcome to Black Men of Greater Springfield's youth programs. Our programs are designed to provide a safe and supportive environment for the youth of our community. Through a combination of mentorship, education, and community engagement, we aim to empower our youth to achieve their full potential. Discover the range of programs we offer and get involved today.

W.E.B DuBois Academy Saturday

The W.E.B. DuBois Academy Saturday Program is a youth development program inspired by the Million Man March, aimed at providing young Black boys in Springfield with academic development, mentoring, cultural history, and leadership skills. Originally a three-year pilot, the program has since become a key part of BMGS, operating for over 20 years and serving 20-30 young men each year with tutoring, personal development, and community engagement activities.

W.E.B DuBois Academy Summer Camp

The free Summer program was created in response to parents seeking activities for their children during the summer months. It serves about 50 youth, ages 8 to 14, with organized activities, daily meals, field trips, and specialized programs such as swimming and robotics. Many participants who show leadership potential become Counselors-In-Training, eventually developing into full counselors, with the camp primarily staffed by former W.E.B. Academy youth. This program provides younger kids with safe, fun activities and older youth with leadership and work experience opportunities.

UNITY Grant Program

UNITY Grant program to provide mini-grants to community youth service groups, inspired by discussions with State Representative Ben Swan.

These grants have enriched the lives of children through sports leagues, youth development programs, and cultural events across the greater Springfield area.

V. Goodman Summer Baseball

The Viola Goodman Instructional Baseball League was established in 2019 with the help of the Boston Area Church League and the Red Sox Foundation to introduce inner-city youth, ages 5-12, to baseball. Named in honor of Viola Goodman, a devoted Red Sox fan who passed away at 105, the league was created to keep her memory alive.

Youth Scholarship Program

For over 30 years, BMGS has awarded scholarships to hundreds of young men and women, helping them cover the costs of their education. With the growing needs of today's youth, BMGS remains committed to continuing this vital support and invites the community to join in sustaining our future.

Workforce Initiative Program

The Workforce Initiative, a collaboration between the BMGS and The Crew, aims to raise awareness and provide education about vocational work opportunities that require about one year of formal training. Both non-profits, established in Springfield, focus on improving the quality of life for local residents by connecting them with training and jobs while supporting area employers with qualified workers. This effort involves training providers, employers, elected officials, and the community working together for success.
